Notice of intent to make a determination

Harvesting of damaged  timber by the 2023 forest fire on Quaaout 1 – Public Comments Invited

December 20, 2023 – Indigenous Services Canada must determine whether the proposed  harvesting of damaged timber by the 2023 forest fire on Quaaout 1 located in the vicinity of Tappen, BC is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

To help inform this determination, Indigenous Services Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination.

Written comments must be submitted by January 21st, 2024 to:

Notice of Determination:

British Columbia – March 19, 2024 The Indigenous Services Canada has determined that the proposed harvesting of damaged  timber by the 2023 forest fire on Quaaout 1 is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:

  • impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples;
  • Indigenous knowledge;
  • community knowledge;
  • comments received from the public; and
  • technically and economically feasible mitigation measures.

Mitigation measures taken into account for this determination are detailled in the environmental screening decision for the project.

Indigenous Services Canada is satisfied that that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

Therefore, Indigenous Services Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
